Steelworkers certified to represent TD-Canada Trust employees in Sudbury

SUDBURY, ON, March 30 /CNW/ - United Steelworkers’ Ontario/Atlantic Director Wayne Fraser announced Wednesday that the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has approved an application for certification allowing 112 workers at eight TD-Canada Trust branches in Sudbury to have Steelworker representation.

“This is a victory for these workers, who made it their mission to get representation from Canada’s most diverse, progressive union,” said Fraser. “We are pleased to welcome them into our growing membership in the financial sector.”

The TD-Canada Trust employees join more than 1,000 employees of banks and credit unions, who have been Steelworker members since the early 1990s.

“Representing workers in many different sectors is not about the union’s survival,” said Fraser. “It’s about workers understanding that having a union provides a measure of security that is not possible when relying solely on the perceived goodwill of employers.”

“We sought out the union to represent us,” said TD-Canada Trust employee Donna Remeikis. “The United Steelworkers will help make good jobs even better.”

Fellow employee Mike Bedard added, “Sudbury is a union town. We think the very fact that our institution is unionized will attract quality employees and union members who want to do business with a union bank.”
